This is a comprehensive course on epilepsy at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. The MSc in Epilepsy is a unique course designed for students looking to acquire a solid background in all aspects of epileptology. This MSc is a multidisciplinary programme designed for health professionals (nurses, GPs, paediatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, neurophysiologists, EEG technologists, occupational therapists) and graduates with science degrees (eg. biomedical science, physics, chemistry, physiology).

What will you learn?

The programme covers all topics related to human epilepsy, from fundamental neurobiological mechanisms to clinical aspects and psychosocial consequences. The programme includes practical experience in clinical or research departments of partnering hospitals.

The philosophy underlying this course is that caring for patients with epilepsy, and the research necessary to improve that care, depend on the application of a very wide range of disciplines.

The programme consists of four compulsory modules for diploma and two additional research modules for the MSc
degree:
Module 1: Fundamental science
Module 2: Diagnosis of epilepsy
Module 3: Treatment and management of epilepsy
Module 4: Special topics, psychosocial and legal issues
Modules 5 and 6: Research Project (MSc only)

Course content includes: Introduction and Basic Principles; Pathology, Physiology and Neurochemistry of Epilepsy; Clinical Neurophysiology; Classification and Semiology; Natural History of Epilepsy; Genetics of Epilepsy; Neuroimaging; Differential Diagnosis; Epilepsy associated with other disorders; Medical Treatment; Special topics in the management of Epilepsy; Neuropsychology; Surgical treatment of Epilepsy; Psychiatric aspects; Social aspects; Epilepsy in the Third World; Healthcare and Epilepsy; Forensic aspects of Epilepsy.

How will you study?

The programme will comprise six modules including weekly lectures, extracurricular activities and a dissertation.

Teaching takes place at the Institute of Psychiatry in Denmark Hill

How long is the programme and when does it start?

The MSc in Epilepsy can be taken as one year full-time or two years part time. Enrolment is in September and dissertations are
submitted at the end of August.

What qualifications do you need to enrol?

A university degree in scientific, biological or medical science subjects. English Language requirements are:
