American Academy of Neurology honours Dr. Orla Hardiman

Dr. Orla Hardiman, consultant neurologist at Beaumont hospital in Dublin, has been awarded the first Palatucci Advocacy Leader of the Year Award by the American Academy of Neurology. The selection committee of the Academy commended her "tireless advocacy efforts on behalf of the neurology profession and patients" in Ireland.  Dr. Hardiman has been actively seeking to improve services in Ireland for patients with neurological disorders.  She strongly endorses a partnership approach, whereby the medical profession works with patient advocate organisations to improve service provision, and in this regard she is medical patron of the Neurological Alliance of Ireland.  Dr. Hardiman has been an active Council Member of the IICN in recent years, and established the bi-annual "Diaspora Meeting", a forum for Irish neurologists based overseas to present and discuss their research findings with neurologists working in Ireland.  Dr. Hardiman travelled to Dana Point, California this month where she was presented with the award. http://www.aan.com/advocacy/index.cfm
