Irish Neurological Association Meeting 2005 Synopsis

The 41st annual Meeting of the Irish Neurological Association took place on May 13th and 14th 2005 at Croke Park Conference Centre, Dublin 3. There was widespread agreement that the Meeting had been highly successful, once more confirming the prominence of this prestigious meeting in demonstrating the very exciting research activity in neuroscience in Ireland.

The meeting opened with a Reception hosted by the President, Mr. Christopher Pidgeon, at the Mansion House on Thursday, May 12th. On Friday, the meeting was formally opened at Croke Park Conference Centre by Mr. Pidgeon who welcomed INA members and delegates to the meeting.

A highlight of the meeting was the Guest Lecture which was delivered by Dr. Diederik Dippel, internationally renowned Stroke specialist, Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam. Dr. Dippel is involved in the evaluation of the effect of guidelines on the quality of acute stroke care and secondary prevention after a TIA or stroke, the development and evaluation of clinical tools for prognostic diagnostic decision making in stroke and post-stroke dementia.

At the INA Business Meeting it was agreed that the trial period of joining with the IICN had been a success, and it was decided that the INA should join with the IICN permanently. The name of the INA Meeting, together with the important historical document the INA Minutes Book, would be preserved and continued into the future. A new prize for best Neurosurgical presentation was established. Dr. Farrell proposed that the INA Meeting should be held in Galway in 2006 with Dr. Michael Hennessy as President. This proposal was seconded and agreed by the meeting.

In excess of 130 delegates participated in the meeting, many of whom attended the very enjoyable Dinner at Castleknock Hotel and Country Club on Friday evening.
Mr. Pidgeon thanked the very generous sponsors of the meeting, all those involved in organising the meeting and the staff at Croke Park Conference Centre and at Castleknock Hotel.
